The controversy of partnered typing continues! One of the greatest misunderstood, poorly defined and understudied mysteries of our time generates strong opinions on both sides.
Partnered typing is a process where a nonverbal person, often diagnosed with severe autism, is paired with a communication partner. Suddenly, the non-communicator demonstrates incredible knowledge and literacy skills. Parents are spellbound! Promoters suggest the child picked up all this information from his environment without being taught. What is occurring?
Staunch believers are usually those who use the process. Detractors seem to be those who have not had the first-hand experience. They have read the research, and have concluded the communication partners, are knowingly or unknowingly leading the nonverbal typist, using subtle physical cueing. Why don't researchers explore how these often severely out of sync typists can pick up imperceptible to most people. If the typist is typing without any physical arm support but requires a partner in their vicinity, proponents refer to it as independent typing. Proponents of partnered communication, glaze over the necessity of shared attention and active listening as emotional support and motor support. Many suggest it is regular communication and, and a nonverbal person is a typical person trapped inside a body that does not work. Division and polarization continue without exploration or study. No one can aptly explain the anomaly.
Within the community of supporters, there are those, like me, who believe the process has an extrasensory component. Acceptance of an "energetic" connection, is necessary to begin to define and understand the process. I refer to my process as ECC-Energetically Connected Communication. Without this "energetic" component between partners, the process doesn't make sense. I refer to my nonverbal mentors as Qautists because of their seemingly expanded awareness. Most Quatists I know have a diagnosis of severe autism, but not all autistic people share their gifts. I see my self as a necessary Catalyst for their expression.
The Qautists, I believe, have an expanded awareness. Atypical telepathy, joining of consciousness, entangled fields of thought, simultaneous knowing, merging minds, soul connection, tapping into spiritual realms, uniting as one, accessing the Akash or universal field of thought are all currently incredulous possibilities of how our partnership works. I have many more questions than answers.
What is happening? How can we utilize it? What are the benefits for the Quatists and the Catalysts? Why is there so little investigation? Why are those who use and promote partnered communication seemingly so unwilling to question? What does this amazing process have to teach us about the expansiveness of consciousness? Why isn't an investigation of this, inexplicable, energetic, soul connection among partners occurring? Why do so few Catalysts even recognize it? Is this the beginning of an evolutionary form of communication?
These questions continue to baffle me. My only sources are the nonverbal souls who commune with me. Can I trust what they lead me to believe about this "new technology" of communication? How much do I, like other Catalysts, unknowingly influence them? Could brain-wave technology decipher if our brain waves are syncing, and who is initiating? Does the initiation shift, and under what circumstances?
Researchers consider supported communication useless because participants cannot pass, message passing tests. Instead of repeating the same message passing studies, why not ask "Why," this is true? My nonverbal friends have suggested, I create destructive interference if I have no idea where they are going. We need to be privy to the same information. Is this true? Qautists have proposed and demonstrated, they see through my eyes. Is this possible?
Why are kids who are generally unresponsive, agitated, and out of touch with reality, so willing to participate? Why does their behavior improve, and why do they become increasingly organized and in sync? Why are Qautists able to type or write with some people and not others? Why do Qautists bring through varied information and even contrasting opinions depending on the Catalyst with whom they partner? Why isn't the anomaly looked at from new angles?
What are the benefits? What are its constraints? What do Catalysts need to know, in terms of influence? How can we use the "energetic" connection strategies to teach other skills? Where is the forward, thinking Catalysts and scientists willing to explore and advance the process?

Why do parents and professionals continue using partnered communication processes, if there aren't any benefits? Are they all delusional? Why don't other communication partners see the "energetic" component or the correlation among FC-Facilitated Communication, Facilitated Handwriting, RPM, Rapid Prompting Method, and Direct Telepathic is overlooked by many. If Catalysts are aware, why do many limit themselves to one process? If others share my awareness, why do they remain silent? Why the secrecy and censorship, whenever someone mentions paranormal or extrasensory components? Why does our everyday limited perceptual reality still define these boundless souls? Why do experts often warn, the kids easily mirror, the thoughts and feelings of those they interact with, yet not understand, this same mirroring often influences communications? Why do deep questioning, honesty, and full disclosure make people so uncomfortable?
Why do I usually hear the words before they are written or typed? The Qautists show me more as I evolve, removing boundaries. Why isn't the aptitude, ethics, and responsibility of the communication partner or Catalyst studied?
I believe the dynamic relationship between Qautists and Catalysts needs to re-defined in terms of the "energetic" principles.
Until this happens, I suggest Catalysts, and direct telepathic receivers, be mindful, especially when making life, changing decisions concerning Qautists. Weigh all information. Watch behaviors. Investigate. Use independent strategies -signs, gestures, body language, pointing, and AAC-Assisted Augmentative Communication, not just partnered-communication. Do not suggest, catalyzed communication is more reliable than independent ego strategies. In my experience, it is a different process entirely. So little is currently known.
There are so many fascinating layers to explore, but our mentors can only teach us as much as we are willing to learn. Be prepared to go deeper in search of the truth to broaden your perspective. Remove limitations. Question and explore. Do not ignore or gloss over what does not make sense.
